Bipolar – Lithium Orotate, the Safe Non Toxic Lithium

The brain loves lithium orotate

If you’re anything like me you won’t like the word ‘Lithium‘. I have a huge dislike for it because of knowing the damage that has been caused to so many bipolar patients who have been put on toxic doses of lithium as their treatment. But my perspective is changing. Not because I think being intoxicated with lithium is a good thing, but because I’ve been learning about another type of lithium, the ‘natural’  lithium, ‘lithium orotate‘.

The Dreaded Lithium Bipolar Dance

I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 in June 2009. At the time of being diagnosed I knew enough about the harmful impact of various drugs on the body, so when they told me I was going to be put on lithium (‘for the rest of your life!’) I knew I had to stand up for myself and say ‘NO’. It took a kind of super human strength I’d never experienced before or since to say that ‘NO’. I had a distinct knowing that I had to protect myself in that moment. I summoned a huge big ‘NO’ to the lithium and to being hospitalised, whilst simultaneously gathering all of my power to not freak out and not scream and not attack and not maniacally try to escape the hospital, which would have probably resulted in me . . . . well, being put on lithium, and being hospitalised.

That was one of the most intense and frightening experiences I’ve even had.

One of the biggest things backing up my ‘NO’ was the fact that I was insulin dependent. Since being diagnosed diabetic 15 years or so before being diagnosed bipolar, I knew enough that I didn’t want to be put on any other long term drug that I would become dependent upon.

They told me there and then ‘You need to be on lithium for the rest of your life’. I knew that was not a healthy road for me. I already had a weak immune system, I didn’t need it being broken down further by lithium toxicity, which is hugely damaging in so many ways.

Apart from the human-genetically-engineered insulin injections I take every day to keep me alive, I am a natural girl. My insulin dependency is a huge reminder that there are beneficial drugs coming through the big pharma business.

So that word lithium has really scared the shit out of me and I’ve always felt uncomfortable at any mention of it.

Then, about a year or so ago, whilst researching natural ways to heal bipolar and depression, I started hearing/reading about lithium orotate for the first time. At first I was rejecting it, because of what I thought I already knew about lithium. But, after watching a few videos and reading various different reports online I started learning some interesting things.

The Difference Between Lithium Orotate and Lithium Carbonate

I’m not a doctor or health advisor or well-being guru of any kind. I’m just a lass, who lives with bipolar, and who is blogging away sharing what I find to be useful and helpful information. So don’t expect any kind of in depth article here. If you want to look more deeply you can find loads of info and studies and reports through Google.  I’m just handing you a little information to open you up to a possibility that may not have yet been there for you.

With that said I’ll share away . . .

Lithium is an essential trace mineral that we all need to maintain optimum brain function. We would usually get lithium from our greens, but, our soils, even the soils our organic foods are growing in, are depleted of minerals nowadays, so we’re not getting enough minerals through our diet. Lithium is as important to us as other vital trace minerals such as salt, magnesium, zinc etc.

What has always freaked me out about lithium are the stories I’ve heard about ‘Lithium Carbonate’ having crazy damaging affects on the body.  But there’s a good reason why that happens and why it’s cousin, the natural lithium orotate doesn’t have a damaging affect. The difference between these two lithium types are their ‘bioavailability’.

Bioavailability

Lithium Carbonate, the FDA approved lithium, which is recognised as a drug (but which is actually a mineral), has essentially been heavily prescribed in toxic amounts because of the way it is absorbed into the body. Lithium Carbonate cannot access the cell as effectively as lithium orotate does. Therefore, large amounts of Lithium Carbonate need to be taken into the body because only a really small amount of what’s ingested will actually get into the cells.

The rest of the lithium gets distributed through the blood stream and body, causing a build up of toxicity, which causes harm to our internal organs, in particular the kidneys.

However, lithium orotate is distributed in a different way. It’s bioavailability is much more effective and so it only needs to be taken into the body in small safe amounts in the first place. It is more easily absorbed by the cell, which is exactly where the lithium needs to go. In the small doses that lithium orotate is needed there is no waste and toxic build up in the body causing residual harm. The lithium is getting to exactly where it needs to go and is not being redistributed through the body and blood stream.

With that said, here’s some benefits that natural lithium orotate can bring you.

Brain Protection: Studies show that the mineral lithium can actually rejuvenate and build the grey matter nerve cells in the brain by up to three percent.

Anti-Aging Effects: Small amounts of lithium orotate have been shown to offer anti-aging effects to the brain.

Neuroprotection From Environmental Toxins: Lithium has been shown to protect the system from numerous toxins, particularly in the grey matter of the brain.

Lithium Orotate Supports Mania and Bipolar Affliction – Lithium is the most effective available element used for stabilizing mood swings.

Also, this is something cool that I haven’t tried out yet but is even more up my street – Homeopathic Lithium

“HBC’s ‘Symmetry’ is the first ever homeopathic Lithium Orotate homeopathic spray formulation. Synergistically combined with both GABA and Albumin, Symmetry is designed to help you instantly achieve therapeutic brain Lithium concentrations while supporting balanced brain function, especially during episodes of anxiety, stress, depression.”

I love homeopathy so this is something that I am definitely going to look into.

I’m Now Experimenting With Lithium Orotate

I recommend you looking into this further if you’re considering giving lithium orotate a try. After not opening my bottle for a year, once I got really settled with the fact that it is just a natural trace mineral that we are all needing, that I am needing, I got comfortable enough to give it a try. I’m purposely taking very small amounts. 1 or 2 tablets a day.

Dr John Gray (Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus) recommends taking more if you are feeling particularly stressed. In fact there are a bunch of videos of him talking about Lithium Orotate on YouTube, if you’d like to check him out.

‘My Brain Feels Fried!’

When I get hit by a massive way of emotion, crying, tears, sobbing, exhaustion, confusion, sadness, hopelessness, grief even, it literally feels like my brain is being deeply deprived of something essential. I often describe how I feel as being like ‘I’ve had my brain fried’

This isn’t that far from the truth.

When you are being flooded with stress hormones (which I am when I get emotiona and when I get diabetic swinging blood sugars – all sorts of stress hormones are released into my body) the brain is actually getting depleted of what it essentially needs. And from what I’m learning online, lithium is one of the key minerals that’s being depleted and needs to be replaced.

So if you want to give your body all the minerals it needs lithium is an essential one to add, but just remember there’s a much, much safer one available.

So that’s my wee word on Lithium Orotate. What do you think? Would you like to look into it further?

I hope you find this post in someway helpful. If you have any questions please comment below and I can let you know how I’m getting on with my small doses of the natural Lithium orotate.

So far so good x just a couple of tabs today have significantly reduced the brain stress I’ve been feeling over the past week.

I think there may be something in this . . . .

  1. Interesting read, I get Fried Brain now and then usually in Winter as I suffer with SAD ( seasonal adjustment disorder ) and really really need sunshine and daylight.

    Thanks for sharing x

    • Kev x have you had you Vit D3 levels checked? Most people are deficient in Vit D3 and it’s easy to get a natural capsule x x I wonder what’s going on in the brain when SAD hits. I wonder what deficiencies come into play. I Know Vit D is connected with the sun. I am feeling better today after taking some Lithium Orotate today x x I’m in experimental mode x x Fried Brain is not good! xxx
